Prime Fishing Locations Near Us
Here are the top fishing spots you can reach easily from Kenai Adventure Cabins:
Kenai River – World-famous for sockeye salmon, silver salmon and rainbow trout. Explore Kenai’s private lot on the Kenai River is 15 minutes from KAC.
Kasilof River – Equally renowned, especially for sockeye salmon run in July and King salmon in June.
Nearest Boat Launch – Centennial Park (about 8 minutes away).
Kachemak Bay, Homer – Just 1.5 hours from KAC. Call Inlet Charters to get out on the saltwater for halibut and other species.
Why these spots matter: The Kenai and Kasilof Rivers host massive salmon runs. The proximity to our cabins means you can maximize your time on the water and still return for comfortable lodging and amenities.
Fish Handling and Storage – Getting the Best Flavor
Protecting the quality of your catch is key. Follow these steps for the best results:
A. At the time of catch
Immediately stun your fish with a sharp blow to the head (this prevents it from thrashing and damaging the muscle tissue).
Bleed the fish by cutting the gill and placing it in clean, cold water (about 10 minutes) to reduce “fishy” tasting meat and preserve texture. (According to local guide advice.)
B. Keeping it cold
Use a cooler with plenty of ice, preferably shaved ice, to surround the fish.
Drain off any melt-water regularly (standing water can degrade the meat).
Bring your catch to a processor as soon as possible.
C. On‐site storage at Kenai Adventure Cabins
For one-room cabins: Guests have access to shared freezer space at our Base Camp (two full-size fridge/freezers).
For two-bedroom cabins: You’ll have your own private fridge/freezer for convenient storage.
Important note: Due to bear activity and property safety, fish cleaning is not permitted on-site at KAC. Please clean your fish at the river before returning.
Processing & Shipping Your Catch
After your day on the water, here’s how to handle what you bring home:
Custom Seafoods will clean, vacuum-seal, and freeze your fish for shipment or extended storage. (They may even offer free storage for a period.)
If you’re shipping home, plan ahead: packaging, shipping lead-time and transport logistics matter (especially from Alaska).
Tip: Ask processing facility about export/import regulations for your home state or country
Additional Tips
Purchase non-resident fishing license. Check regulations for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.
Respect bag limits, species restrictions, and size limits—these vary by river and time of year.
Be wildlife‐aware: Bears, moose, and other large animals frequent riverbanks. Follow safety protocols in camps and on trails.
Weather can change fast: Pack rain gear, layers, and good footwear for riverside terrain.
Even if you’re “just relaxing”, consider short fishing forays—many guests enjoy casual casts from Centennial Park.
